Simulating battery loads and cells to test an automotive BMS

Testing an automotive battery management system (BMS) requires accurately simulating and monitoring key battery parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature across individual cells. To assess performance under real-world conditions, engineers must perform load testing using programmable DC loads and battery simulators. These tools replicate various dynamic load profiles, enabling the verification of the system's response to power demands, protection mechanisms (including overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent), and cell balancing capabilities.

To evaluate auto-balancing functionality, each cell’s behavior within a battery pack is tested for variations in capacity, internal resistance, and state of charge. A multi-channel DC bench power supply simulates the battery cells, with each channel set to voltage and current values that represent real-world conditions. The LIST mode is used to program voltage imbalances over time, which triggers and validates the system’s balancing actions to ensure proper operation.
